Should brands buy CSK's rebuild?

The business of cricket, for sponsors.

The question.
Chennai Super Kings are rebuilding off the field before they rebuild on it. Should a brand sign with CSK for 2027 now, or wait to see what the new set-up produces?

What we know.
CSK named Zaheer Khan head coach on 21 September, ending Stephen Fleming's run in charge since 2009, a period that brought five IPL titles (Outlook India). This week the rest of the staff changed too. Michael Hussey and Eric Simons have left, along with the strength coach and the physio, and a team video named Albie Morkel, Gareth Batty and Mohit Sharma in their place (India.com).

Zaheer is due to meet MS Dhoni in Mumbai before retentions are filed. Reports say CSK plan to release several players to take a bigger purse into the auction, with the overseas group a priority (CricTracker). The side finished eighth in 2026 and has missed the playoffs three seasons running (Khel Now). Dhoni, who missed 2026 through injury, has said he will decide on 2027 before December.

Retentions close on 15 November and the auction is set for 16 December in Goa. It is the last mini-auction before a 2028 mega auction that also opens the next media rights cycle (Business Standard).

The case for waiting.
Almost nothing a sponsor would put in a brief is settled. The coach is new, much of the staff is new, the squad will change by mid-November and the team's most valuable face may not play. A brand that waits until after 16 December buys a team it can actually see. Three seasons outside the top four is also a fair reason to ask for a lower price, and that case only gets stronger if the auction goes badly.

The case for signing now.
CSK's pull with fans has never rested on the points table. The yellow shirt sells in a bad year as well as a good one, and a rebuild is a story the team will want partners to tell with it. A sponsor that commits before the auction buys in at the low point of the cycle, when the team needs revenue and good news more than it will in March. That is the moment to ask for longer terms, first refusal on new assets and content rights around the new coaching group.

Our view.
Buy the badge, price the face separately. CSK's colors and its fans will be there whatever the retention list says. Dhoni may not be. A sound deal fixes position and price for the team asset now, and puts any player-led content on a separate line that pays out only once the squad is known - and probably more importantly, Dhoni's availability for the season.

Then pay for delivery, not reputation. In one IPL 2026 match TrueVal measured, the peak concurrent audience was 2.8 crore against a cumulative reach of 22 crore. That is one jersey sponsor in one game, a sample, not a benchmark. But it shows that most people who see a match are not watching at the same moment, and who is batting in the big overs decides how many are. A rebuilt CSK will have new big overs. Ask for 2026 delivery data on your exact asset, and write a review after the 2027 season into the contract.
