Should MI sponsors wait for a captain?
The business of cricket, for sponsors.
The question. Mumbai Indians now have a new head coach and, from 2027, a new kit maker. They do not yet have a settled captain. Should a brand sign with MI now, or wait until the leadership is clear?
What we know. On 24 October MI promoted Kieron Pollard from batting coach to head coach, in place of Mahela Jayawardene, who left the week before. It is Pollard's first job as a head coach. He takes over a side that finished ninth in 2026 with four wins from 14 games and has not won the title since 2020 (The Tribune, Khel Now).
The captaincy is open. Reports this month, citing India Today and NDTV, said MI's management was leaning towards bringing back Rohit Sharma, though an NDTV source said there had been no internal discussion (Yahoo Sports). Hardik Pandya's future is also unsettled: Cricbuzz reported that swap talks with Rajasthan Royals for Yashasvi Jaiswal had gone quiet (Yahoo Sports). Teams must file retention lists by 15 November, and the auction is tentatively set for 16 December in Goa (Business Standard).
The case for waiting. A sponsor on MI's shirt is partly buying a face. A campaign built around one captain looks dated if someone else leads the team out in March. Shoot dates, ambassador clauses and season creative all depend on who stays. After 15 November most of the squad is known. After the auction, all of it is.
The case for signing now. MI's last season was weak, and a ninth-place finish is a fair point to raise in any price talk. At the same time MI has a fresh story to sell: a new coach and, from 2027, a Nike shirt. A brand that commits before that story firms up may get a better rate and a wider choice of positions, before rivals in its category look at the same spots. Shirt space is finite, so waiting has a cost too.
Our view. Sign the asset, not the face. A brand can fix its position and price now and handle the people questions in the contract:
- Tie player-led content to "the captain or two named players", not one name.
- Ask for a rebate if an agreed player leaves before the season.
- Measure 2027 delivery by social footprint and in-game visibility.
The last point matters more than it sounds. In one IPL 2026 match TrueVal measured, the live audience behind a jersey sponsor's visibility streaks ranged 60x, from 2.8 lakh to 1.7 crore. That is one asset in one game, a sample, not a benchmark. But it shows how much of the value rides on who is at the crease, and when. A sponsor cannot pick MI's captain. It can write a contract that pays for what it actually gets.
